IMG Database Project Overview

This link will provide information concerning International Medical Graduates in the Canadian Post-M.D. training programs and in the physician workforce. It will also give status reports of the development of the new IMG database which is now in its initial stages.

The national longitudinal database project will track International Medical Graduates from the time they enter the Canadian medical assessment, training and licensure pathways until they begin practice in one of the Canadian provinces. This pan-Canadian database will provide a complete picture of physicians who earned their qualifications outside Canada and their unique contribution to the Canadian physician workforce.

The following organizations are providing the data for this collaborative endeavour because of their unique roles in assessment, evaluation, and licensure of International Medical Graduates:

  • Thirteen Medical Regulatory Authorities
  • Regional and Provincial IMG assessment centres
  • Seventeen Canadian faculties of medicine
  • College of Family Physicians of Canada
  • Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Medical Council of Canada.

The IMG database is one of the six recommendations from the Task Force on Licensure of International Medical Graduates, created by the Federal / Provincial / Territorial Advisory Committee on Health Delivery and Human Resources.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada's Foreign Credential Recognition Program.
